The emphasis in Lay Speaking Ministries is leading, caring, and communicating. You are not expected to preach after taking a lay speaking course unless you feel that God is leading you to use this gift. Lay Speaking Ministries is designed to equip the laity with communication skills to lead others and share our faith through many areas of service.
When a person has completed the basic course and is recommended by the Charge Conference, he/she is recognized as a Local Church Lay Speaker. Upon completion of an advanced course and recommendation of the Charge Conference, he/she then becomes a Certified Lay Speaker.
Training is offered at various locations in the district twice a year – in the fall and spring. You will receive an announcement via mail. Also, the district office sends these announcements to the pastors and will be available on the district web site. To remain on the active roster, a Local Church Lay Speaker or a Certified Lay Speaker must complete a course every three years. By completing a course in 2008, you will need to re-certify in 2011. Of course, you do not need to wait. Additional courses can be taken at any time they are offered.
The Lay Speaking Ministries web site is www.layspeakingministries.org. Here, you will find resources to assist you in your work. You will see how lay speaking in the Sanford District is a part of a national and regional organization.
Please be reminded that one of the requirements is to complete an annual report form to be submitted to your pastor for Charge Conference. A copy is available on the website, from one of the coordinators, or through you pastor.
